Only near-white pixels are recoloured. Check the preview: white clothing or a light headscarf may change too. This is an editing aid, not a guarantee of official compliance.

Some application forms ask for a formal photo with a red background, sometimes called a passport-style photo. If you only have a picture taken against a white or very light wall, this tool can recolour that background to red and crop the photo to a standard ratio, without a studio visit and without uploading your face to a server.

Where red backgrounds are requested

Red is commonly requested on Indonesian forms. For example, the 2023 CPNS FAQ from BKN asked for a passport photo with a red background at 200 KB, and also noted that requirements vary by institution. Other forms may ask for blue, white or another colour, so read the current instructions for your application before you start.

How the recolouring works

This is an honest, simple method, and knowing how it works helps you get a good result. The tool does not detect people or faces. It looks for pixels that are near-white and low in colour, meaning every colour channel is above about 205, and turns those into red (RGB 202, 42, 48). Everything else is left alone.

That leads to a few practical rules:

  • Start with a plain white or very light wall. Grey, cream or patterned walls will not be recoloured cleanly.
  • Avoid white clothing and a light hijab. They are near-white too and may turn red.
  • Watch for highlights. Strong light on the forehead, glasses or teeth can create bright spots that also change colour.
  • Use soft, even light so the wall is evenly bright and there is no shadow behind your head.

Always look at the preview carefully. If parts of your clothing or face turned red, retake the photo with darker clothing or softer lighting.

Crop, size and output

The photo is centre-cropped to either 3:4 (output 600 x 800 px) or 4:6 (output 600 x 900 px), and saved as JPEG at 92% quality. Position yourself in the centre of the original frame, with some space above your head, so the crop keeps your head and shoulders.

Pixel dimensions do not set a print size in centimetres. If you need a physical print at a certain size, set that in your print software or at the print shop. If your form limits the file size, for example to 200 KB, pass the downloaded photo through the 200 KB JPG compressor.

What this tool is not

It is an editing aid. It does not check biometric rules such as head size, eye position, expression or glasses, and it does not guarantee that a passport office or recruitment portal will accept the photo. Those decisions belong to the receiving authority and its current instructions. If you need a blue background instead, switch colours in the same tool or open the blue background version. Your photo is processed in the browser and is never uploaded.

How to use

  1. Choose a photo

Select one photo of yourself taken against a plain white or very light wall.

  2. Pick the crop ratio

Choose 3:4 for a 600 x 800 px result or 4:6 for 600 x 900 px. The crop is taken from the centre.

  3. Select red background

Keep the background set to red. You can switch to blue in the same tool if your form asks for it.

  4. Check the preview

Look closely at hair edges, clothing and highlights to make sure only the background turned red.

  5. Download

Download the JPEG once the preview appears, then compress it if your form has a KB limit.

Frequently asked questions

Why did part of my shirt turn red?
The tool recolours near-white pixels, and white or very light clothing falls into that range. Retake the photo wearing darker clothing.
Does the tool detect my face or body?
No. It only recolours very light, low-saturation pixels, which is why a plain white background works best.
Will the photo meet official passport rules?
Not necessarily. The tool changes the background and crop only; head size, pose and other requirements are decided by the receiving authority.
What size in centimetres is the output?
The output is set in pixels (600 x 800 or 600 x 900), not centimetres. Print size is set by your printer or print shop.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. All editing happens in your browser tab and the image is never sent to a server.
